Susan Bergman makes ceramic sculpture and teaches the occasional class at Earth & Fire Studio in Uptown New Orleans. She shows her sculpture and functional ware at the Bywater Art Market at Markey Park, at the New Orleans Arts Market at Palmer Park, and by appointment at Earth and Fire. In spring 2007, she spent two months learning more about clay at the Penland School of Crafts near Asheville, NC. In July 2008, one of Susan's sculptures was shown at the Forum 35 Art Melt in Baton Rouge, LA. In fall 2008, she set up her booth at the Jubilee Festival in Daphne, AL, and at the Covington Three Rivers Art Festival. Susan works mostly in stoneware, creating pieces that are often narrative and frequently whimsical. She anthropomorphizes just about everything, and incorporates myths and archetypes into many of her pieces, often mixing species and gestures to find metaphors for human attitudes and emotions. |
Susan Bergman - sebergman@aol.com Eggplants may hold parasols; a woman with a goat's head may recline on a divan; a horse-headed man turns somersaults on the side of a pitcher. Her boxes often contain a surprise or story inside to demonstrate that the interior world is essential to the exterior. She likes transformation, irony, juxtaposition, and muscular thighs. Susan lives in Uptown New Orleans and can often be seen riding her bike Crash Landing to the gym. Call or drop by to see what's new.
